NYCC Beginner Workshop
Think you’re funny? Ever wanted to try stand-up? Now’s your chance to learn how to do it right. New York Comedy Club Stamford is launching its first-ever workshop, created for aspiring comedians and anyone curious about the art of stand-up comedy.
“Whether you’re dreaming of getting on stage or just want to be the funniest person at the office, this workshop is a great first step,” says Candi Clare, head talent booker at New York Comedy Club. Participants will learn directly from Clare and guest professional comedians in a fun, supportive environment. “I love Stamford’s mix of campus energy and corporate hustle—it’s full of people who could totally crush it on stage.”
The workshop offers a hands-on, supportive experience designed to help participants develop their comedic voice, learn how to structure jokes for maximum impact, and build confidence on stage. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the industry directly from working comedians and the bookers of New York Comedy Club. The class also introduces students to the Comedy Jackpot mic and showcase series, overseen by Joe Checkman, Development Booker at NYCC, where one standout participant will have the chance to perform in a real competition. With space limited to only 16 spots per session, the workshop ensures personalized attention and direct feedback. Instructor Candi Clare—who also leads advanced workshops in NYC—is joined by Joe Checkman to provide expert guidance and support, with both dedicated to nurturing new talent across all New York Comedy Club venues.
Candi Clare is currently the Head of Talent and Development for New York Comedy Club, and has been working in the stand-up comedy industry for the past 15+ years. In addition to booking clubs and festivals, Candi works consistently with organizations in cultivating both live and virtual comedy shows. She currently co-produces a weekly show with "The Daily Show"’s Michael Kosta, and has directed multiple comedy albums and specials, including those of Ashley Austin Morris, Mike Finoia, Maximilian Spinelli, Ben Kirschenbaum, and Mike Bramante, among others. Candi has written and produced a feature film, co-hosted a successful podcast, and comes from a performing arts training background, including conservatories in England and NYC. She is an active board member of the Ladies of Comedy Association. Her years of experience have kept her uniquely in tune with the constantly changing trends in comedy and made her a master in navigating those shifts.Candi noticed there was immense confusion for newer comedians trying to understand and navigate the industry. She started a Comedy Intensive Course in early 2018. The focus is for comedians to learn club dynamics, festivals, representation, how to workshop jokes, tighten sets and collaborate with other comedians.
